Social Support. For Black Mothers.

Being The Village is a culturally specific support group that caters to Black mothers and is welcome to mothers of color.

Our mission at Being The Village is to create a support system for those who often feel isolated, ignored, and overwhelmed. Curating a space to be human, perfectly flawed, and figuring this motherhood thing outTogether.

Meet Our Founder.

A smiling Black woman holding a bouquet of flowers

I am Chelsea Lawyer: a graphic designing, work-from-home wife, and mother of four. I occasionally battle with mom guilt, thoroughly enjoy sushi, and have a slight addiction to thrifting.

I'm also certified in infant massage, Triple P, baby wearing, a breastfeeding peer counselor, and serve as a board member for the National Service Office of Nurse-Family Partnership.

I founded Being The Village in 2019. At the time, my dream was to find mom friends who looked like me. Knowing the disparities within Black birth and beyond, that dream evolved into the goal of carving out a space for mamas to feel comfortable receiving knowledge, sharing experiences, and growing together.

Since the birth of this group, times have changed, community has evolved, but the need for support remains consistent — especially when it comes to the unique experience of Black motherhood.

Through this group, I found the connection I was looking for, and I want the same for you! Whether you're looking for local resources and advice, or simply want to make a few friends — this is the place for you.

Community Awaits.

It Takes A Village To Raise A Child.

We know you’ve heard this quote before.

At its core, it explains the necessity of community.

Here at Being The Village, we mostly agree with the phrase. We understand the challenges of postpartum recovery, child development, and the everyday struggles of motherhood.

We also believe that community doesn’t just start when a child is born. Rather, that we mamas also thrive when surrounded by healthy relationships and interactions.

Our main priority is building relationships and providing resources for Black moms to thrive in their role as a mother. By fostering a supportive community, we can empower and uplift each other to be the best mama we can be.

Maya Washington.

She joined Being the Village in 2019 as a new mother and has since continued working with the program as a co-facilitator.

Her other community work includes Pathwaves 2022 fellow, partnered with Washington Communities for Children as a Policy and Advocacy fellow, WA State Parent Ambassadors Parent Coordinator, Doula with both Open Arms and Nurture by Nature family birth support services, and Positive Parenting Program Provider.
